Prefinish your individual pieces
before you assemble them together. Particularly if you use pine,
because the grain likes to raise, after the first coat of finish,
and then it is a lot of work to try to sand where the pieces meet.
If the direction of the grain is
alternating from piece to piece, it is also difficult to sand the
entire unit without leaving cross grain scratches.
Prefinishing before assembly helps
to prevent this.
